DAY 02 Chianti – Greve in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti
In
the heart of the Chianti Classico is Greve in Chianti, the “Wine Town”,
with its vineyards, olive-trees, its castles, its parishes and its
medieval hilltop villages. Every season is ideal for a stay or for a
visit, to admire an extraordinary landscape and to discover the richness
of the wines and the flavors the Chianti land has to offer.
Greve is
a small, charming town and spreads around a nice square ‘Piazza
Mercatale’ the market square – where still today on Saturday morning a
colorful outdoor market takes place.
In the heart of the Chianti
Classico is the tiny village of Castellina in Chianti with its
vineyards, olive-trees, and its central castle. Every season is ideal
for a stay or for a visit, to admire an extraordinary landscape and to
discover the richness of the wines and the flavors the Chianti land has
to offer.
Tour of the area of Greve in Chianti and Castellina in
Chianti with cellar visits and tastings of the excellent Chianti wines
in two of the top wineries of this area.
DAY 03 Chianti – Gaiole in Chianti and Radda in Chianti
The
settlement undoubtedly originated in extremely ancient times, as
attested by numerous place names of Etruscan and Latin origin as well as
by archaeological evidence found at Cacchiano (remains of a 2nd- and
3rd-century cemetery) and at the San Marcellino parish church.
The
countryside around Gaiole in Chianti is dotted with many castles due to
the strong influence of Noble families and later, by the Florentine
Republic’s need for defensive positions. In some cases, the ancient
castles have been converted into villas.
It is located on the valley
floor along the road leading from the Chianti area to the upper Arno
Valley. Gaiole is developed outward from its central piazza. It shaped
like an elongated triangle and the local shops open on the square.
Formerly
the headquarters of the Chianti League, Radda in Chianti retains its
medieval street plan and an imposing Town Hall. Classical Medici villas
with 16th century windows and wells compete with romantic villas,
constructed magpie fashion from castles or Etruscan ruins. One 17th
century masterpiece is Vistarenni, a white beacon of sophistication
unimaginable in the countryside south of Siena. Outside of Radda is
Volpaia, one of the most picturesque villages in Chianti. A tortuous
road climbs to medieval towers, castle ruins and Brunelleschi-style
church.
Tour of the area of Gaiole in Chianti and Radda in
Chianti with cellar visits and tastings of the excellent Chianti wines
in two of the top wineries of this area.
DAY 04 Montalcino
On
a hill, in a spectacular countryside, rich in woods and wonderful
vineyards at 41km south of Siena there is the medieval town of
Montalcino.
Montalcino is a pretty village, where prevails the Roman
– Gothic architecture, dominated by the 14th century Medicean Fortress
which has an Enoteca (wine shop) offering on sale almost all the best
representative Brunello of the area.
Vineyards are planted mainly
with Sangiovese Grosso clone of Sangiovese, locally named as Brunello.
The history of Brunello counts about 150 years. The beginning of it was
put by Ferruccio Biondi–Santi, he understood the potential aging of
Sangiovese Grosso to obtain a full structured and bodied wine.
The
Family Biondi-Santi together with other pioneers such as the families
Cinelli-Colombini, Costanti and Mariani, have continued the production
and have been joined during the 70s and 80s by many other vintners.
Nowadays the “golden hill” thanks to its terroir, good weather
conditions and enormous amount of capital invested, represents the most
successful reality in the Italian wine making industry.
Brunello –
the crème de la crème of Italian wine-making - truly shows its
potential: marvellous elegance together with excellent power and
concentration of taste and aroma, with spicy hints Brunello never
intends to be “a light drink”.
Six miles south of Montalcino stands
the 12th century abbey of Sant’Antimo, a Romanesque gem of pale stone
well worth a visit especially when the Monk community sings Gregorian
chants.
Tour of the area of the Montalcino with visit and tasting
of the excellent Brunello wines in two of the top wineries of this area.
Today we will move to a deluxe accommodation in Maremma coast.
DAY 05 Maremma coast
Tuscany’s
coast after the ancient maritime republic of Pisa and past Livorno the
Medici port city, keeps jealousy hidden the territory of Maremma. A
former stronghold of the Etruscans, a swamp during the Middle Age and a
fertile dried out land during the 19th century, Maremma is now the wine
Mecca of Tuscany. This territory is Tuscany’s deep south, a little–
visited province with interesting hill towns and herds of snow-white
cattle controlled by “Butteri” the Italian cowboys.
The upper part of
Maremma, in the territory of Bolgheri off Livorno, thanks to the
passionate work of few pioneers, among all the legendary Marchese Mario
Incisa della Rocchetta, created in the latest 60s a new wine district.
The challenge was high, as Maremma has always been a difficult, hard,
and sandy territory with very hot summers and influenced by the strong
sea breezes. Bolgheri in spite of its lack of wine heritage, is now
often compared to Bordeaux, because of its particular terroir that
allows cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon to develop successfully.
Tour of the Maremma coast area with visit of two top wineries of this area and tastings of their excellent Super Tuscans wines.
